An interesting new article in Frontiers of Pharmacology, by Pinja Leimuranta et al., titled Emerging Role of (Endo) Cannabinoids in Migraine, is a great ‘mini-review’ of how cannabinoids control migraine pain. This is a really important topic for so many people who suffer from migraine headaches. I’d extend this to apply to other forms of headaches as well.
We know that cannabinoids have anticonvulsant, analgesic (anti-pain), antiemetic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Being migraine headaches involve these components, it becomes readily clear that CBD can help with modulating the pain and dysfunction associated with migraine headaches. The mechanisms that govern pain are the same all throughout the body and the mechanisms that counter pain are the same as well. This is why a properly functioning endocannabinoid system (eCB) is so vital. Your body is not as successful with cutting down pain of any type if your eCB is not functioning as it should. This is why CBD is so great. It helps restore normal function of your body/neurological system so you can better modulate pain, all without side effects of pain medications. Although there is a time and place to take medications, it’s best to enable our bodies to not only modulate pain but also address what is causing it. This is what the eCB and CBD are all about.
As a refresher, CBD helps to knock down those two nasty enzymes I’m always talking about: FAAH and MAGL. By doing this, our own endocannabinoids, Anandamide and 2-AG (the ones our body makes) can actually work by activating the CB1 and CB2 receptors. As I’ve said before, most people have excessive FAAH and MAGL. It is important to understand that stressors of any kind increase the body’s production of these enzymes. As the body works, if you have a lot of FAAH and MAGL, you do not have a working eCB. Either fix the system or pay the price. At Noetic Nutraceuticals, we are all about fixing the system!
CBD helps us achieve having a functioning eCB in a natural and safe manner. When our neurological system is working more efficiently, it’s amazing how much better we feel and function. In essence, the eCB is identified as being the master homeostatic mechanism of our brain/body. It has to work for us to work as intended. If you have been reading our blogs, you know that the eCB’s effect on migraines is only one result of a properly functioning eCB.
The brain has an abundance of CB1 receptors. When our eCB is working, the CB1 receptors are activated by the now readily available Anandamide, and to a lesser extent the 2-AG. This is what blocks your body’s response to pain in the brain….the mental response. The inflammatory component of the migraine is affected by CB2 receptors (anti-inflammatory) and CBD helps to allow your 2-AG to activate those receptors, thus directly reducing pain and inflammation.
Be healthy and feel good! Be sure your eCB works as it should. This is why at Noetic Nutraceuticals, we do what we do!
