CBD, Coronavirus and the Immune System

We are getting a lot of questions about whether CBD (Hemp Extract) can help with the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The short answer is YES, it certainly can help.

Now, let’s be clear, it is not seen as a cure, but CBD has properties (anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory) that can aid with symptoms and help a person stay healthy to fight off illness.

In order to fight disease and illness, we need our immune system to be functioning properly and many studies have shown that CBD can aid with this.

Noetic’s Dr. Manison says, “We know that CBD activates your immune system through the CB2 receptor as it allows for your body to increase its levels of 2-AG by eating away at MAGL, but we usually only view this in terms of its effect on the anti-inflammatory and pain reduction functions that the immune system governs.  But there are studies that now show that CBD also does affect the immune response of the body to bacterial infection!

A December 2018 study in Scientific Reports, titled ‘Antimicrobial Potential of Endocannabinoid and Endocannabinoid-like Compounds Against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus’ by Mark Feldman et al, demonstrates that for the first time, the endocannabinoid system plays a vital role with our body’s ability to fight bacterial infections.”

To understand further, think of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) as the master homeostatic system of the body.  Wikipedia states, “The endocannabinoid system remains under preliminary research , but may be involved in regulating physiological and cognitive processes, including fertility, pregnancy, various activity of immune system, appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory.”

The ECS has three parts:

  • Endogenous (meaning your body makes them) beneficial cannabinoids or endocannabinoids called Anandamide and 2-AG.
  • ‘Nasty’ enzymes, (FAAH and MAGL) that break down the endocannabinoids so that your ECS doesn’t work as well.
  • The cannabinoid receptors that sit on sensory nerve fibers, called CB1 and CB2 receptors.

How does the ECS work?

CBD allows the ECS to work by effectively destroying those enzymes (FAAH and MAGL) that are eating away at the endocannabinoids. By doing so, our endocannabinoids (Anandamide and 2-AG) can bind with the CB1 and CB2 receptors on the sensory nerve fibers and get the ECS working the way it should.

If we have anxiety, it works to calm us down.  If we are in pain, it works to reduce inflammation. The goal is always to maintain balance amid the stresses of life. As we age or experience stress, this system begins to wear down and our health deteriorates.

Less stress + less pain = A higher functioning immune system.

Taking a daily CBD supplement, along with healthy lifestyle choices, (like washing your hands, eating well, yoga, rest, exercise), can only help.

If you are experiencing symptoms of the virus, be sure to go to the doctor immediately.  Up to date information can be found at CDC.gov.
